The
Hawaii Joint Police Association (HJPA) is a federally
recognized non-profit philanthropic organization, dedicated
to the enhancement of law enforcement and criminal justice.
Informally begun in August 1967 as the Hawaii Joint
Military Police Association, the HJPA gradually became more
formalized and expanded its membership to include
representatives from federal, state and local law
enforcement agencies. Individuals from the private sector
who face law enforcement or crime containment challenges
parallel to those in public and military agencies, as well
as retired law enforcement personnel and interested members
of the general public are eligible for membership.
The primary goal of the HJPA is to provide a central
meeting location, once each month, for all whom are
affiliated with the aforementioned agencies, to afford them
an opportunity to discuss common interests, to exchange
ideas, alleviate potential problems and to establish
harmonious working relationships. These meetings are also
open to the public and news media.
The focal point of each meeting features a guest
speaker. The HJPA Executive Committee and Chair of the
Program Committee make every effort to select guest speakers
with a broad range of experience from public and private
sectors. This allows the membership to be exposed to a wide
spectrum of contemporary law enforcement topics that are
interesting, informative and sometimes controversial.
The Board of Directors consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and a Sergeant at Arms. Nominated and elected by the active membership, the Board of Directors serve for one year in their positions. In order to provide continuity, they may serve as the Executive Committee in an "on call" capacity as advisors to the board for up to three additional years. Committees, consisting of an many volunteers as necessary from the general membership are formed and appointed to assist the Board in such matters as selection of individuals to receive awards, selection of guest speakers, procurement of door prize items, etc.
