Aloha Patrol Officer Faiupu F. Tagaleo'o Burns International Security Counsel of Police and Private Security Awardee
Aloha Patrol Officer (APO) Faiupu F. Tagaleo'o is being recognized with
this prestigious award after rendering first aid to a choking child on
the sidewalk area fronting ABC Store on May 14, 2001
On May 14, 2001, Aloha Patrol Officer Tagaleo'o was assigned to patrol
the Koko Head end of Kalakaua Avenue, extending from Ohua Avenue to
Kapahulu Avenue. While patrolling his area, he observed a child
appearing to be having difficulty breathing. The child was beating his
chest and stroking his neck, displaying symptoms of choking. The
toddler, a three-year-old male, was turning red and drooling from the
mouth. APO Tagaleo'o immediately ran to the toddler and asked if he was
"okay". The toddler didn't respond and continued beating his chest and
stroking his neck. APO Tagaleo'o picked the toddler up, turned him over
and gave two back blows, dislodging a piece of meat from the toddler's
throat. The toddler's breathing and alertness returned to normal. The
mother of the choking toddler thanked APO Tagaleo'o, and the entire
family departed the area before the arrival of the Honolulu Police
officers.
APO Faiupu F. Tagaleo'o distinguished himself by showing outstanding
sound judgment and reacting in a professional manner. His rapid
response to a medical emergency and use of the Heimlich maneuver saved
the life of the toddler. His trained response brings great credit to
himself, the Aloha Patrol, and Burns Security.
