Salute To Women After Action Report

The HJPA set another historic record today. More than 150 members and guests were on hand for the 2nd Annual Salute to Women, thus surpassing the January 1999 Hall of Fame attendance record. What was totally impressive and heartwarming was to see the representation from the Honolulu Police Department and the military services, especially the Army, Navy and Air Force. Rene Mansho did a super job as the MC and she led us in a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem and Hawaii Pono i, the state anthem. The first special award was the Distinguished Service Award for the late HPD officer Lucile M. Abreu who was appointed in 1953. Accepting for her was her grandson, Officer Abreu, a third generation family member of HPD. Tears came to most eyes as he spoke with dignity and pride in accepting the honor on behalf of his late grandmother.

Another special award was presented to Assistant Chief of Police Barbara Uphouse Wong who will be retiring from soon from HPD. She was at a family wedding and accepting for her was Chief of Police Lee Donohue. In accepting the plaque Chief Donohue asked a question on behalf of Barbara. He wanted to know what day it was today. The answer could have been "Cinco de Mayo" but what the Chief was looking for - "Boys Day." Today as we saluted women it was Boys Day.

Other dignitaries present included Warren Ferreira, Outrigger Hotels and Resort, former Deputy Chief of Police, HPD. Deputy Chiefs of HPD Michael Carvalho and Bobby Au were on hand along with Assistant Chief Gene Uemura, Police Attorney Tim Liu. The Deputy Chief of Police from Maui was with us as was the Military Police Brigade-Hawaii Commander, Colonel Lou Traverzo as was ASIS Chair, Mel DeCosta. I may have missed a few more of the distinguished guests, but all are "first among equals."

Kudos to Walt McIntosh - Last night on the evening news Walt McIntosh and AID gave an outstanding video presentation on how to prevent car theft and how to park in locations that greatly reduce the odds. Yesterday the Oahu Crime figures indicated that crime in general is down 10% but auto theft is up 30%.

Of the Troops and For The Troops HJPA Mousepad. I purchased 50 Mousepads and they are all gone. If there is a demand we can make a reorder. At $7 a Mousepad it is a bargain. If you are on-line and want to order direct from the factory to reduce your shipping costs, let me know.

CID Commander is coming to town. I received a message from HJPA member Ki Chang in Korea reporting that BG David Foley is enjoying the visit to Korea and will be headed to Hawaii next week with his CSM. As most of you know General Foley was the MP School Commandant prior to becoming CID CG over a year ago. If you want to see him, contact Major Terri Kohler at the Schofield Barracks CID Office.

Army Retiree Council Meeting - On Saturday, May 13th at 0800 the annual Army retiree activity day open house will be held at the Fort Shafter Community Club the Hale Ikena. Retired Major General Dick Murray, President of the National Association of the Uniformed Services (NAUS) will be guest speaker. He is the former Commander of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service and was a military comptroller. He is going to be talking about the lobbying efforts of his organization which includes SMW (Society of Military Widows) with the Congress to improve medical benefits for retired military. After the meeting there will be a buffet luncheon for $10. The public is invited and more than 400 will be in attendance. A good time to see old friends. All services and all veterans are welcome.

Matsunaga VA Grand Opening - As most of you know the VA has moved from the Federal Building and is now located on Tripler Hill. The administrative headquarters for the VA is in the E Wing. The various veteran organizations have representatives on the first floor of the E Wing and the VA has its counselors on the first floor. Across the street from the 605 space VA Parking Garage is the new Ambulatory Care Center, ACC. That is now open for business on a "shakedown" cruise. Down the hill where Tripler once had a motor pool is the beautiful VA Center for Aging that has been open for almost two years. It accommodates 65 hospitalized VA patients. In addition the VA has a hospital ward inside Tripler. Mr. David Burge, Director for the Matsunaga VA, urges ALL veterans to sign up and register with the VA and the VA will make a determination on level of eligibility based upon interview. At the Army Retiree Open House the VA will have a representative sitting with Hal Fulton of the TREA helping veterans to register with the VA. The official grand opening of Matsunaga will be on 31 May at 1000 AM. The public is invited.

Aloha,
