HJPA Monthly Meeting Reminder
The January meeting of the HJPA will take place on Friday, 9 January 1998, at the Hickam Air Force Base Officer's Club starting at 11:30 AM.
We are saluting our venerated member, Colonel W. Frank Steer, on his 97th birthday celebration. We have been celebrating Frank's birthdays since he reached age 70. For those not familiar with his background, Frank is a living legend. He served with General Pershing and MacArthur in France during World War 1. He graduated from West Point in 1925 and served in Hawaii with General George Patton and General Hugh Drum. During World War 2 he was in charge of the local police under the rules of martial law. He also operated the POW camps in the mid-pacific. He shook hands with Colonel Tibbets and the crew of the
Enola Gay prior to the A-bombing mission. He played cards with Dutch Schultz and Omar Bradley. Frank was destined to become the Air Provost Marshal of the new Air Force in 1948 serving in Washington, DC at the request of Touey Spaatz then the Air Force Chief of Staff. He retired from the Air Force in 1950 and has been living in Hawaii since.
Three movies depicted the life of Colonel Steer. The movie From Here to Eternity was the most famous, and in later years Dennis Weaver and Angie Dickinson used my office at Fort Shafter for the filming of the TV Movie Pearl 1 and 2. It again was the story of our hero.
Be sure to be on hand and bring a guest as we celebrate with Frank.
Colonel Testa, the Hickam Air Base Commander, and a security police officer will be on hand to greet the HJPA and Frank. We expect around 50 at this luncheon so call Cindy Rabago the Tripler PMO secretary at 433-6671 to confirm your attendance.
Happy New Year. (Pick up a calendar book at the January meeting).
