DECEMBER NEWSLETTER
The December meeting of the HJPA was held at the Honolulu Country Club on
Friday, December 1st. Doug Aton, former Assistant Chief of Police for
Honolulu was the guest speaker. Doug explained in detail the plans for
Honolulu to host the Asian Pacific Bank. Doug thinks the meeting will bring
in about $25 million dollars to Hawaii and the security for this meeting
will be a large portion of the expense to host it. The Pacific Daily news
announced earlier this year that this meeting was going to happen.
According to Doug the Governor has given his blessings and the meeting is a
go for May.
Colonel Frank Steer was released from the VA Center for Aging at 2:00 PM on
Friday and said because he was going home he wanted to be excused from the
HJPA meeting. That's dedication.
The January meeting will be a double feature. First it is going to be held
on the 2nd Friday and that is a change. We are doing this because Frank
will be 100 on that day and he is attending the meeting to celebrate with
us. Any member wanting to pay tribute to Frank should let Don Devaney know
by calling him at 433-4465 or replying to this message by e-mail. Bill
Fitzpatrick is flying in from California to be with the Colonel and that
also is dedication.
The second big event for January is the induction of the year 2001 HJPA Hall
of Fame. The following were elected into the Hall -
Peter Carlisle
Steve Alm
Lee Donohue
| Warren Ferreira
Bill Fitzpatrick
Pat Jones
|
|
and posthumously: Ray Wong
|
Many worthy names were placed into nomination and we counted dimples, etc.
to come up with the winners. Seriously one vote makes a big difference.
Table of 10 for the luncheon will cost $150 or $15 per person. RSVP will be
appreciated.
WANTED - HARD COPY BULLETIN EDITOR
My Uncle Bob has been kind enough to print a hard copy of the monthly
newsletter for mailing to those members not on e-mail. It has become too
much for me to run it as a one person show and there isn't time to purchase
the stamps, print the newsletter, type address labels, mail the letters each
month. Some members say that our attendance is dwindling because the
"hard-core" are not receiving a paper newsletter. So I ask one of the
"hard-core" to step forward and take on this task. It will be a big help.
In the past 25 years we may have met once or twice other than the first
Friday of the month, but some still forget when we meet. So to keep the
membership confused and give them an excuse to miss the meetings, we will
have the January meeting on the 2nd Friday.
NEEDED - MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY
Another volunteer is needed to start from scratch a membership directory.
It is a challenge for 2001. Our web site at http://www.hjpa.org has most of
the members listed, but not all.
FINANCIAL DONATIONS NEEDED
As we end a tax year, some of you may wish to donate to the HJPA. Please
mail your checks to Ken McWade, Treasurer or Pat O'Brien, President or come
to the 12 January 01 meeting and bring your 2000 year checks with you. Any
amount is appreciated.
DUES - 2001
For those members paying annual dues - 2001 dues $25.00
CONDOLENCES
Otis Brown just returned from a long visit to the mainland that included
time with his brother in Detroit. Otis received word last week that his
brother passed away and the HJPA sends its condolences to Otis.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year!

COLONEL STEER'S BIRTHDAY PARTY
The HJPA will celebrate Colonel Steer's birthday party on Friday, January
12, 2001. It will be his actual birthday, so mark your calendar and be
there at the Honolulu Country Club.
Colonel Steer is a patient at the VA Center for Aging on Tripler Hill. He
called me Friday and said "I have proved them to be a liar." What he meant
was that upon admission he was told he probably would not be able to walk
again. Well because of his exceptional response to physical therapy he is
now on his feet and can walk. He looks real great. On Veterans Day, SPC
Jim Ingebredtsen from the Tripler PMO and Colonel Steer's enlisted aide,
took him to the ceremony at Punchbowl. Colonel Steer was in his element,
talking with all the Veterans and had a great time.
We at the HJPA have been celebrating his birthday each January since he
turned 75. It has been an annual tradition for 25 years. Sometimes the
members would give him a token gift, make some remarks, but usually we just
sang the song and had a good time. This year we hope to have a strong
turnout and hopefully each of you will think of something to present this
great American, veteran and life member. We will be charging $15 per person
for this event because it is going to be shared with the induction of six
new members in to the HJPA Hall of Fame. Names will be announced at the
December meeting next Friday of those selected.
Make reservations for the January meeting by responding to this e-mail
please. A table of 10 is $150 and we expect more than 100 to be with us.
We need to start off the official 21st century and the real new millennium
with a bang. The HJPA has been hanging in there for many years, and we have
a bright future, so please be a part of it by attending as many meetings as
possible, and bringing in new members.
Proclamation on Colonel Steer's Birthday
Howdy Y'all, Howdy Y'all, All you wonderful citizens of the Islands in the Pacific. It is with great feasting and ceremonious enjoyment that we send greetings from the great Nation State of Texas to Hawaii on the occasion of Colonel Frank Steer's birthday. Further, we honor this great military American warrior not only for his distinguished service to his country, but on the occasion of his one-hundredth birthday.
Personally, I will not forget the inspiration and leadership he gave me during my short term as President of the Hawaii Joint Police Association. Happy Birthday Colonel, May God Bless You. We are sending by this message, Warm Holiday Regards to you and all your friends. From our outfit to
Yours,
Ed Johnson, Colonel, USAF (ret) Granbury, Texas.

CORPORATE MEMBERS - 2001
The first new Corporation to sign on for the new millennium is the Hirano
Brothers. Bryan Hirano is a member of HJPA and is better known as "Day
Trader." His brothers are becoming a Corporate member.
We are proud to have this Corporation membership category and renewals for
Charter members remain at $100 and all others at $150 per year. We need
Corporate members more than ever because our membership rolls consist mostly
of life members who have paid up dues for life. The HJPA appeals to those
of you who have had a reasonably successful year to make a voluntary
contribution to our organization. Any amount will really and sincerely be
appreciated.
Aloha,
Don Devaney,
Chairman, Ways and Means
