AUGUST NEWS
The August meeting was another great success from my point of view. Chief Freitas and the former Chief of Police for Kauai County, Brian Fujiuchi were present. Many members and guests also attended. The former sergeant at arms was absent again and therefore we need to apologize to the membership for not having the HJPA Flag and the National Colors nor the HJPA Lectern Plaque or the gavel on hand. The Vice President has been assigned the additional responsibilities to get to the meeting a little bit early and do these things. Our Chaplain, Bill Fitzpatrick is on emergency leave in the mainland and in the past Bill always took the initiative to set up the room. We missed him and his sidekick Warren Watts our membership chairman was among the missing. Fortunately there was a prepared prayer and we were able to get the meeting off without a hitch.
We had an interesting round table where the members and guests were asked to provide a short update on what they and their agency are doing. It obviously stimulates some interest and is a big improvement than going around the room for a perfunctory name garbled out in most cases. A couple of our members asked not to be introduced, so no slight was intended. We are respectful of anonymity when it is requested.
Rene Mansho demonstrated that she would make an excellent President of
the HJPA and one of these days we are going to ask her to run for one of our
offices. She is 100% behind law enforcement and private security and for a
person holding a responsible position like she does on the Council that is a
big plus for the HJPA. Rene is an old friend of Chief Freitas and she
"surprised" the Chief with a beautiful Certificate signed by all 9 members
of the Council for him. She gave a thorough description of his impressive
background and really made the meeting great. We also surprised Rene with a
special gift in a plaque with a sheet of the famous McGruff postage stamps,
Take a Bit Out of Crime, in appreciation for what she has done for D.A.R.E.
and other crime prevention programs. The HJPA presented the Kauai County
Police Department with a Certificate of Merit and another was presented to
Chief Freitas. We also gave him an HJPA Safari Shirt that had his 4 stars
on the lapel and his name above the pocket and the HJPA Patch above the
opposite pocket. The association also donated $100 to the Chief who said he
will be giving it to one of the youth organizations in Kauai.
Chief Freitas extended to us an invitation to visit Kauai in 1999 and the
HJPA plans on doing just that. We will be discussing a one day seminar for
April-May timeframe. Also the HJPA for 1999 is going to ask that two
chapters be opened on the neighbor islands of Kauai and Maui. We will go to
the Big Island in the year 2000. Any member wanting to assist, please let
me know. It will be a rather simple procedure since the Chapter's will be a
part of the HJPA which is already incorporated, has a constitution and
bylaws, etc. But it will be our first effort to become state-wide,
something our founders envisioned.
We were happy to see Chuck Horstman back with us and on the other hand
sad to say goodbye to a new member, Mike Mosbach from Goodenow Associates. Mike has been a steady participant this year with Joe Cabrejos, but he is
moving up the corporate ladder and has accepted a bigger position in Los
Angeles. We wish him the best of luck and ask that he keep in touch with
HJPA and let us know how things are in LAX.
I had three guests from St. Louis, the Dempsey family. They were
leaving for the mainland later in the afternoon, but were able to make the
meeting. Tom Dempsey spent a career working for AB aka Budweiser. In his
day employees were given free beer to take home each week. A heck of a benefit, but with litigation the way it is, AB had to stop that practice. Tom said that "insiders" preferred Busch Beer and Bud Lite of all the brands they make. I told him that in Paradise, Bud is still the King of Beers.
Alice Roberts was with us as usual, CC is on a mainland sojourn, I think he is driving a motorcycle through every state. He had a close call and flipped over (a --- over teakettle as the expression goes). He was not hurt but the bike was totaled.
Bert Corniel, our guest of honor for September, made a pitch for the LEAL recognition program on 8 October. He reminded everybody and asked the HJPA to get in their nomination for it's "Top Cop."
The HCC had a "Shot Gun" tournament so parking was at a premium and unfortunately the HJPA Golfers were not able to play. Sensormatic who is donating one tee time a month, will select two for September. The following members have signed up for the September drawing. Other golfers will have to see Pat O'Brien for a tee time and will need to pay $45.

If I were VP of Sensormatic I would select all five, but I am NOT the VP. Any other golfers that were unable to be there yesterday, let me know and I will add your name to the list.
Gross Joke Award -- to Colonel Steer. Joke #1 was palatable, but the 2nd one flunked the taste test.
Joe Vierra a member we haven't seen in a while told us he was living in the woods with a couple of hundred scouts, boys and girls. He turned 70 in the wilderness. Nice to see Joe with us.Ê

Warren Ferreira gave an excellent thumbnail presentation on what Crimestoppers is all about. The HJPA does NOT appreciate the cheap shot taken by the local TV against Crimestoppers and we are thankful that people who are dedicated like Warren are at the helm. Thanks Warren.
Kudos to Chuck Horstman who has been promoted to be a senior Vice President with First Hawaiian Bank filling the vacancy created when Doug Gibb moved to the mainland. Chuck donated $220 for an HJPA table at the LEAL. That means 10 members of the HJPA can sit at that table, first come first served, by answering this update and letting me know you are interested.
Wanted: More e-mail addresses. Many of our members can be contacted by e-mail IF they provide an address. It costs money to go by snail mail and it is no where near as timely. Further if you are not on-line you don't get first crack at things such as the generosity of Chuck Horstman.
See you soon. Support the HJPA, get a friend to join.
Sincerely,
Don Devaney, President
Letter from Rene Mansho
Aloha Don and members of HJPA,
Thank you for your hospitality and an interesting meeting on Friday, August 7, 1998, at the Honolulu Country Club.
I am honored to be a part of your prestigious and hard working organization, and it was fun being able to honor such a great man, Chief George Freitas.
Law enforcement and security are vital services and your efforts to work together are a great benefit to our community.
Most of us take safety for granted and we don't get to thank all of you enough or ever, so on behalf of the public, thank you so much.
As a follow-up to my discussion about the retention of our HPD officers and preventing further losses to Washington State, I
welcome your input as well as on related issues.
I won't be able to attend the September meeting due to a council meeting, but I plan on attending your Ocotber meeting and
hopefully get in some golf, too.
Mahalo for a great summary of the meeting. You're the best!
A hui hou,
Rene
