AUGUST NEWS

Monthly Meeting: Friday, August 6, 1999 - Honolulu Country Club, Salt Lake at Time: 11:30 - 13:00

Guest of Honor: John Peyton, Assistant U.S. Attorney, Criminal Division

The July meeting was held on Friday, 2 July as we headed into the 4th of July weekend. Still Chief Donohue made it and he brought along with him Deputy Chief, Mike Carvalho. We had 32 in attendance and that was a dip from our average of 48. August is another month in the middle of summer, but please make an effort to be with us.

There have been some new faces to join the HJPA. Gloria Neumann, HPD Psychologist joined last month as did Colonel Lou Traverzo, the Commander of the U.S. Army Military Police Brigade - Hawaii. Dave Poirier moved from commanding the Army CID at Schofield Barracks to become MP Brigade Operations Officer at Fort Shafter and we wish him well in his new assignment.

Tim Ciampaglio relinquished Command at the USCG and we wish Tim the best of everything. With all the military changes, it is important for veteran HJPAers to keep the momentum moving by inviting the new faces to join us. I need your help on this.

LEAL - Law Enforcement Appreciation Luncheon - The HJPA received an invitation to nominate a member for the annual LEAL or "Top Cop" ceremony that will be held in October. There are many categories eligible for recognition. I received a letter from Rags Scanlan, CEO and President, Royal Guard Service and he has a dilemma in that he can only submit one individual and he has three deserving of recognition. The HJPA came to his rescue by asking the Big Island Chapter to screen the application of the Hilo nominee from Royal Guard and they have done that at their monthly meeting last Friday.

Date Glitch on PCs. - Claude Jones, HJPA member and now living in the mainland sent an advisory about the calendar on most PCs set at a default that will turn over to 00 on 1 January 2000 unless you do something to change the default. I followed his instructions and now my PC has a default that will read January 1, 2000 as 01/01/2000. I sent this to the HJPA mail list, but incase you did not want to bother checking out your PC, I am sending it again.

  • Double Click "My Computer"

  • Double Click "Control Panel"

  • Double Click "Regional Settings"

  • Click on the "Date" tab at the top of the page.
  • Where is says, "Short Date Sample", look and see if it shows a "two digit" year. Unless you have previously changed it -- it does. That's because Microsoft made the 2 digits the default setting for Windows 95, Windows 98 and NT.

This date RIGHTN >HERE is the date that feeds "ALL" applicaiton software and will not rollover into the year 2000. It will roll over to the year 00.

Click on the button across from "Short Date Style" and select the option that shows, "mm/dd/yyyy". Be sure your selection has four y's showing, not just two. Then click on "Apply". Then click on "OK" at the bottom.

    Thanks Claude.
