MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

We started 2005 off with the Hall of Fame Luncheon on January 14th honoring fourteen very impressive individuals. Each honoree was presented with a Hall of Fame medallion, inscribed with their name and year of induction and a suitable for framing certificate. The plaques for each honoree, donated by HJPA Chaplain Don Devaney, will be displayed in the Honolulu Police Department museum for a period of one year. The honorees will then be able to receive their plaques at the end of the year.

As always, Peter Carlisle, City Prosecutor, and our keynote speaker for the Hall of Fame luncheon had inspiring words to say to the people we came to honor. Not only is Peter informative, but he is also a bright spot in the HJPA organization's commitment to recognize the achievements of our law enforcement, private security, and criminal justice counterparts.

We also celebrated MG Frank Steer's 104th birthday and Frank entertained us with several of his favorite jokes. We paid tribute and homage not only to the law enforcement and security personnel in our own community, but to the military personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq, who continue to fight for our liberty and freedom as Americans as well. We also paid homage to our fallen comrades from the War of Independence, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the World Trade Center disaster.

We faced tragedy again when twenty-six marines, out of the Marine Corps Base, Hawaii and one Navy enlisted officer from Pearl Harbor were killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq. Our condolences go out to the families and friends of our fallen comrades.

We have a new addition to our HJPA family, Mr. Sidney E. Milburn, KITV 4 senior producer and director. Sidney took the podium as master of ceremonies for this year's Hall of Fame luncheon. We were so impressed with Sid's professionalism and articulation, that we have asked him back to MC for the Salute to Women's luncheon.

The cost of the monthly luncheons at the Honolulu Country Club is another big issue we must address. Treasurer, Geoff Fernandez, pointed out that we are paying an additional $2.00-5.00 per person out of HJPA funds to keep the lunch at $20.00. We have had no choice but to increase the luncheon fee. We are exploring options to moving the monthly meetings to another location. We want to continue to offer a luncheon in an atmosphere that complements the cuisine and sets the tone for the presentation of the guest speaker. Therefore, effective March 2005, the monthly luncheons will increase to $25.00 per person.

Our guest speaker for the February 4th luncheon was CSI, Lee Goff, PhD., Forensic Entomologist, who enlighten us in the field of forensics. Our March 4, 2005, meeting will feature speakers from the Department of the State Attorney General. Special Investigator Alan Castro will discuss the Cold Case Homicide Unit, and Special Investigator Joseph Makanai of the Hawaii Hi-Tech Crime Task Force.

I always viewed February as the month of "love", because the stores are brimming with beautiful pink and red cards and oh so delectable candies. It was also a time when we honor our family and our loves ones. We hope your Valentine's Day was special in every way. Looking ahead to March, when we can feel that spring is in the air.

I leave you to ponder the words of my mentor, Assistant Chief of Police Joseph Fox, of the Brooklyn Borough South NYPD, "Doing little things well, is a step towards doing big things better."

Dovie Borges-President HJPA

HJPA GOES BUGGY

M. Lee Goff, Chair, Forensic Sciences at Chaminade University of Honolulu was our speaker at the February luncheon. Lee put on an entertaining presentation on his background and his chosen field of study and profession, Forensic Entomology. Lee' s Power Point presentation was graphic, but his captivating style saved the audience members from losing their lunch. Lee' s description of how insect evidence solves crimes and of his forays into television working for the Discovery Channel and the hit show CSI, made the presentation entertaining and informative.

Lee has taught courses on Detection and Recovery of Human Remains at the FBI Academy in Quantico. He also worked in recovery efforts at the World Trade Center in New York, experience that resulted in his being asked to teach at Quantico, VA the FBI' s course on Terrorism and Mass Disaster Response course.

You can find more information Lee and his work on Chaminade University' s website. http://www.chaminade.edu/csi/index.php?pg=content_leeGoffBio.html The HJPA thanks Lee for the time his time and effort at our February meeting.

Both crime fighting units have recently been in the news. This will be an enlightening discussion on two of the State' s proactive law enforcement components.

SUGGESTIONS FOR A CHANGE IN VENUE FOR OUR MEETINGS

The increase in the cost for the lunch buffet at the Honolulu Country Club has caused further discussion with members to change venues. During our February meeting, Rob Roberts of ROBERTS EXECUTIVE SERVICES brought up a suggestion for an alternate meeting place, at Ft. Shafter' s Hale Ikena (self-serve ice cream machine included). Ron Jones of SONITROL OF HAWAII has also researched the possibility of using the facilities at the Moanalua Golf Club. There has been no definite decision made by the HJPA Board, however, your continued suggestion on a new meeting place will be appreciated.
